Fourth-placed Reds have already played nine of their 10 games against rest of the top six and seven of their remaining 11 matches at Anfield.Jurgen Klopp has told his under-fire team their Champions League destiny is in their hands.
And the Liverpool manager made clear he believes failure to finish in the top four this season will be exactly that — failure, given the position they currently find themselves in.
The fourth-placed Reds have played every team in the top six twice, bar Manchester City — most recently last weekend's win over Arsenal — and seven of their remaining 11 games are against sides currently in the bottom half of the Premier League.
With all their European rivals still to face each other, the German made clear he expects his side to grasp their chance to prove themselves a top team.
“Of course, it is in our hands. In this moment I think we should only think about how we can do it,” insisted boss Klopp.Given their inconsistent form against the teams in the bottom half of the table that is no given, but the boss accepts any team with genuine aspirations of challenging for honours must finish in the top four from this position.
They start at Anfield on Sunday with Burnley — a team who have not managed a single away win all season.
