Luis Suarez should have joined Arsenal - Wenger

Embattled Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stated that Barcelona star Luis Suarez would have joined the Gunners in 2013 before he left Premier League club Liverpool.

But the former Monaco boss admitted that Arsenal chiefs were wrongly informed that he had a clause in his contract.

The Gunners launched a £45 million bid for the Uruguay international which Wenger stressed that the player had accepted the deal, but Liverpool refused and sold him to Barcelona for a £75 million in 2014.

"It was very close, we had an agreement with the player, we had been wrongly advised that he had a clause, you know, with a minimum [price]. But we had an agreement with the player. You can ask him.

"I'm convinced that he wanted to join us. And then they kept him for one more year, they improved his contract and promised to sell him a year later to a club abroad,'' Wenger explained.

Meanwhile, Luis Suarez would not have enjoyed lots of silverware if he had joined Arsenal when the Gunners wanted him.
